I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. (Psalm 78:2-4)
As it relates to the Kingdom of God and being witnesses of the risen Messiah, all of us are but a link in the long chain of truth and tradition. We weren’t present to see the things recorded for us in the Gospels but we believe them, in part, because we have personally experienced the Presence of God in our lives. But we believe also because we trust the testimony that has been handed down to us from previous generations. The chain of which we are part stretches back through time to our forefathers and others members in this family of faith — men and women who saw, heard and experienced the events recorded for us in Scripture.
Though we are but a small part of this chain, it is important that we are not a weak link; if only one link is missing, the entire chain is broken. Therefore, it has fallen to us to continue what began long ago. We must be committed to forge a link to the future that our children and our children’s children may be connected to the truths inherited from the past. As it is written, “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).
It is thus established that we have inherited a sacred duty; it is incumbent upon us to propagate, through our words and deeds, the truths and precepts given to us in the Word of God. It is equally important to share our own testimony of God’s wonderful works with loved ones and others so that they may be inspired to follow the path that leads to life. In turn, they will be equipped to inspire those not yet born to follow their example. In fact, when the psalmist says that we are to tell the “praises of the Lord” to the “generation to come,” it actually means to the last generation.
The point is, we all play a significant role in God’s purpose for man as it relates to sharing the Good News. As is is written, before the end of all things, “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations” (Matthew 24:14). Let’s make sure to do our part that the chain not be broken.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
