And I looked, and behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God—had made for yourselves a molded calf! You had turned aside quickly from the way which the Lord had commanded you. (Deuteronomy 9:16)

Even as Moses was receiving the tablets of the covenant, the people were turning away from the promise they had just made. “You speak to God,” they had said, “And we will hear and do all that the LORD has commanded.” However, when Moses didn’t return within a time they deemed appropriate, they took matters into their own hands and went to Aaron saying, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him” (Exodus 32:1). As it turns out, he returned just after they decided to give up on him.

Impatience, coupled with an inclination to return to their mud pits, did not serve the children of Israel well. When things didn’t go the way they thought they should, or if they didn’t occur on their time table, many of them were ready to abandon the way the LORD was calling them to walk. Think of it this way: when Moses didn’t return when they thought he would, they ended up worshiping the image of a beast. Is this a precursor to what may happen in the future? Let’s face it: Peter warned that, in the last days, scoffers would come saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation” (2 Peter 3:4).

Personally, I am convinced that these scoffers arise from among God’s people just as it was in the wilderness. Furthermore, they will try and seduce others into joining with their rebellious attitude and nature. Therefore, we must be diligent to continue in our Father’s ways, remaining faithful and steadfast in the belief that He will do all that He has promised in the time that He has ordained. Remember — after all the virgins had fallen asleep, then the shout of the Bridegroom was heard. It’s in an “hour that you think not” that the Son of Man comes. The point is don’t grow impatient and give up — whether waiting for His return or waiting for your promise to be fulfilled. Don’t abandon what you know to be right even when it seems your answer has been held back; it may already be on the way.

Blessings and Shalom,
