If you’re paying attention to the news and everything that’s going on around us, then you are well that we are in the midst of a war. In America some people say it’s a cultural war or they may all it class warfare. Some people think we’re witnessing an assault on freedom and liberty; an attack against our rights to speak our minds freely or bear arms. Some people believe that we’re in the midst of a war on believers, on Christianity or faith, in general. There are myriad of stories that we could quote, point to or recite that would validate every one of these positions but, let’s look at the big picture. Its not that we’re seeing a war on the First Amendment, necessarily, or a war on Christianity. In reality we are seeing a war being waged against Truth, more specifically, the Word of God. In turn we see that culture’s distain for the Word of God is a manifestation of their disdain for God, Himself. So what we’re actually seeing is a war against the Almighty. Psalm 83:1-4 says:                        

“Do not keep silent, O God! Do not hold Your peace and do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; and those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people and consulted together against Your sheltered ones. They have said, ‘Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation that the name of Israel may be remembered no more.’”

These few verses reveal that the people of the world wish to remove any semblance of God. They hate Him and want to rise up against Him but, because they can’t actually get to Him, they attack His people instead. In effect, they are waging a de facto war against the Almighty. Their tactics focus on undermining the truth by ridiculing the truth; they try to make it look ridiculous, outdated and even fantasy. The result of this hopeless campaign against the Word of God was prophesied of long ago along with a warning to those who wage such a war:

“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20)

As we see in this and other verses, the Adversary always tries to turn the tables on what is true. He portrays evil as something good and good as something to be disdained. Because he is the accuser of the brethren, he accuses God’s people of that he is guilty of. We shouldn’t be surprised then to see that those who emulate his traits will do the same thing. They will call evil, good and good, evil. They will accuse us of being guilty of what they are guilty of doing. We shouldn’t be surprised that those who cry the loudest for tolerance are the most intolerant people there are. They only tolerate those who they agree with and who agree with them. 

How do we, as His people, combat this? Seeing that we’re in a spiritual war we must conclude that its not going to won through petitions, boycotts and protests. We’re not warring against flesh and blood but against principalities. So how do we fight it? We stand for the truth and we stand in the truth. We don’t bow to humanism, progressivism, secularism or any other ism that tries to make evil look good. 

Instead of bowing on the plain of Dura to Nebuchadnezzar’s image, three Hebrew men stood unwavering in the face of certain death. Because of their courage and commitment to the Truth, the heathen king came to know that the God of Israel was God. Notice what they didn’t do. They didn’t protest, they didn’t mount a boycott against Nebuchadnezzar. All they did was stand in the face of adversity and God used that to bring glory to Himself. Perhaps this is the tactic that we need to employ in this day and time. Instead of waging a political or cultural war, using some of the same tactics that the world uses, let’s determine within ourselves to walk in the truth. Let us stand for the truth and when we’ve done all we can to stand, then we stand. 

Here’s one last thought, which speaks for itself and needs no further commentary:

“Why do the nations rage and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, ‘Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.’ He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision.” (Psalm 2:1-4)
