It was on this day in 1949 that the Israeli Knesset (Parliament), voted to transfer Israel’s seat of government from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This was logical seeing that Jerusalem had always been the eternal capital of the Israeli people. However, there have been very few nations who acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, choosing instead to keep their embassies in Tel Aviv. Only recently did the United States and a handful of other nations take the bold step to acknowledge Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and transfer their embassies to Jerusalem. Most nations still refuse to take this position, instead protesting against doing so.
No matter for one day the Messiah is going to settle the issue once and for all. On that day everyone will know that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Isaiah 2:2-3 says this:
“Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways and we shall walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”
This verse makes it clear that, though the nations of the world don’t want to, a day is coming when they will have to go up to Jerusalem and acknowledge their King in His Holy City! In the meantime, we should take note of the fact that, currently, Jerusalem is considered to the spiritual equivalent of Sodom and Egypt (Revelation 11:8). That’s a strong statement in light of the fact that so many people esteem Jerusalem as a holy city, but that is reality according to John. Today, you can find pretty much anything in Jerusalem that you can find in any other city and by that we mean, things that are biblically unlawful.
Nevertheless, we are encouraged to pray for Jerusalem and for its peace. Moreover, when we pray for the peace of Jerusalem, it’s just another way of saying, “Even so, come Lord Yeshua.” Jerusalem will never know true peace until the Prince of Peace sits upon the Throne of His father, David, as Isaiah 16:5 records:
“In mercy the throne will be established; and One will sit on it in truth, in the tabernacle of David, judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness.”
This coming day of peace, justice and righteousness is what we all long for. Until that time is here, our mission is to make the crooked paths straight and to prepare the way so that, as it is written, the One whom we are seeking will suddenly come to His Temple (Malachi 3:1). Therefore, we do pray for the peace of Jerusalem, but moreover, we pray that He would come, quickly.
