They say that “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” (although my wife scoffs at the notion). I guess the point of that maxim alludes to the fact that, from the very beginning, people have been attracted to things that glitter or sparkle. The down side to this is, throughout history people have placed more value on things that shine rather than on things that are eternal. Instead of worshipping the One who created all these things, mankind opted to worship the things created,  including things that give off light – the sun, the moon and the heavenly host. Paul addressed this in his letter to the Romans:

“For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.” (Romans 1:20, 23)

Today’s society is really no different. Maybe people don’t worship the sun, the moon and the stars, necessarily, but our culture enthusiastically worships stars of another kind. We thrive on weekly doses of American Idol or The Voice. Our culture is addicted to the Kardashians and other non-sensical reality shows. The luminaries may be different but people today are no less attracted to things that glow and glitter than those of Paul’s day. And as it was in Paul’s day, God’s people should realize that, “all that glitters is not gold.”

As I said: mankind has always been drawn to things that shine and appear to give off light. They will either be drawn to the true light or they will be lured away by the false light. Yeshua is the light of the world and, as His people, we are to reflect the genuine light that emanates from Him. If we fail in this, by default, people will be drawn to the false light that is presented to them by the Adversary. We are told that Satan comes posing as a messenger of light in order to draw people away from the true light. He knows that mankind is attracted to light and that is why he desires to present an alternative to them – albeit one that destroys. He is able to succeed, more often than not, when God’s people fail to be the true light. Lives depend upon our commitment to the call God has placed upon us. We are and must be that “city set upon a hill” so all may see its light. May we be that true light so that those who dwell in darkness will be drawn to Him.

Shalom.
