Good Morning.

And the LORD said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who were seeking your life are dead.” So Moses took his wife and his sons and had them ride on a donkey, and went back to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the staff of God in his hand. (Exodus 4:19-20)

When Moses received the instruction to go stand before Pharaoh and demand Israel’s release, it must have occurred to him that some of the people who had wanted him dead might still be alive. Thus the word of their demise was, I’m sure, a comforting thing to Moses, considering the gravity of his mission. Similarly, while hiding out in Egypt with Mary and the infant Messiah, Joseph received word of Herod’s death in a dream.

Now when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the young Child’s life are dead.” (Matthew 2:19-20)

In both cases, the servants of God were in hiding so to speak until those who sought to kill them were dead. Though the Adversary would have loved to put a stop to God’s ultimate plan for deliverance and salvation, the Almighty made certain that those who were to carry out His plans were safe. Not only were they safe, but they survived those who would have interrupted God’s purpose and saw it through to the very end. And so it is with those who serve the LORD; He will preserve His servants in spite of the schemes and plots of the enemy. Whereas, the Psalmist says of those who oppose God:

The wicked shall perish; and the enemies of the Lord, like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish. Into smoke they shall vanish away. (Psalm 37:20)

Though we don’t wish for the death of anyone, especially seeing that our God doesn’t want anyone to perish, we gratefully acknowledge that wickedness will not endure. Those who do wickedly may have their moment in the sun, as it were, but their day to shine soon draws to a close. It is determined for the people of God to endure and live that they may bring to pass God’s purpose for this season.

Blessings and Shalom,
