Good Morning.

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. (Genesis 2:21)

It’s interesting that when the Creator determined to make a woman, He did not repeat the steps He first took when He made the man. Where man was concerned, the Bible said that He took the dust of the earth and shaped it into the image He had ordained. When it came to the woman, He determined that she was to be formed from a part taken from the original man.

The Hebrew word that is most often translated as “rib” is literally “a side.” The inference is that, not only did God remove a rib from the man, but he removed a part of who he was in a more spiritual sense. It was this “side” that He used as the basis for the formation of the woman, knowing that He intended to bring them both together once she had taken shape.

If you consider that Messiah, according to Paul, is the “last Adam” (1 Cor 15:45), and that He came to form “one new man” from two entities that Paul regarded as “Circumcision” and “uncircumcision” (Eph 2:11, 15), you can see how this is hinted at in what occurred in the beginning. God caused the “last Adam” to fall into a “deep sleep” when He was crucified. In fact, to make the connection even more striking, we read that a Roman soldier thrust a lance into His side, causing blood and water to flow from the wound.

Because of His suffering, Paul said that Messiah:

“Has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, … so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross (Ephesians 2:14-16).

We have been given the opportunity to be reconciled to God through the Messiah and to be considered as His bride because Yeshua submitted Himself to be wounded and put to sleep. Because of His sacrifice, all of us can hope to be at His side,

Blessings and Shalom,

Bill
