Good Morning.

So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him (Genesis 2:20)

Previously, the Bible records that God determined it was not good for man to live alone and, so, He determined to form a ezer k’negedo  — “a helper comparable to him” — literally a “his help opposite.” Immediately after this statement, God presented all species of beasts and fowl to Adam so that he might name them, “but for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.” Why such an odd statement here?

Rabbinically this is understood to speak prophetically, in the sense that Adam represents God’s people. As such, he was presented with every other type of species to see if a suitable helper could be found among them. This was hinting that, through the ages, God’s people would always look to the other nations — their gods, ideologies and philosophies — in an effort to find companionship. This search would often end disastrously for Israel because they were prone to follow after these other gods and conform to the mindset and lifestyle of the nations.

As followers of Messiah, we are admonished not to be “unequally yoked,” which is to say that we are not to be joined to unbelievers. Because, as Paul continues:

“For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-15).

Because we are to be one with our heavenly Bridegroom, we should not allow ourselves to be seduced by the things of the world that we are not good for us. Taking a lesson from what is recorded in the beginning, though the world may present its best to us as an alternative companion, the Creator has something much better suited for us and His purposes. Let us hold out for His plan.

Blessings and Shalom,

Bill
