Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. (Psalm 51:6)

It is typical of us, as humans, to seek understanding and knowledge that resonates in our mind as being sensible and truthful. The problem with this scenario is that what and how we think is predicated on the condition of our heart. For instance, Eve determined that the forbidden tree was, in fact, good for food even though God had said otherwise. Likewise, there are countless scientists and learned people who are convinced that Darwin’s theory of Evolution is fact in direct opposition to what God has said. And so as David rightly states, truth must be found in the inward parts of man — the heart and soul — not just the mind. This is why we are told to love God with all our hearts first, then with our mind and then our strength — not the other way around.

True, there are some things about God that can be understood intellectually. But many things — I would even say most — that reveal the heart and purpose of God will never make sense to our logic and limited reason. This is why the Word of God is not intended to attract an intellectual approach to understanding Him — at least not exclusively. His Word reveals how His heart desires to reach out to the heart of man; His Word presents Truth to us, and in so doing, exposes what is really in our heart. In fact, His Word reveals those things present in our innermost being that, perhaps, we didn’t realize were there. His Word and His Spirit brings those issues into the light.

Even though we are born again, until the redemption, we remain in this corruptible flesh. Consequently, there remains within us pockets of resistance — remnants of the old nature — that hide in the deepest recesses of our being. When certain conditions arise that awaken these holdouts of our carnal inclination, they make themselves known. They charge to the surface, typically at the most inopportune time, to exploit our weakness. And while that can be embarrassing, and in some situations destructive unfortunately, it can also prompt us to realize that we are in continual need of sanctification; we are in continual need of a Savior. Finally, I would suggest this awareness allows the Word and the Spirit to weed out those pockets of resistance in our heart, so that Truth and Wisdom may take up residence within us.

Blessings and Shalom,
