Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord brings back the captivity of His people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad. (Psalm 14:7)
As David closes this psalm, he conveys a yearning for a time when Israel’s suffering and affliction at the hand of their enemies would come to an end. Speaking prophetically, he longs for the day when those of God’s people who have been scattered throughout the nations would be regathered to Zion under the kingship of the Almighty.
Other prophets echo David’s sentiment and speak of a time when the world’s focus will be upon Jerusalem and Israel. In the end, as all the prophets agree, God will save Jerusalem and send forth His salvation from Zion. As it is written, “For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness and her salvation as a lamp that burns. The Gentiles shall see your righteousness and all kings your glory (Isaiah 62:1-2).”
In contrast to those who long for the restoration of the kingdom of Israel and the reign of the Messiah from Jerusalem are those who seek to destroy Israel and her people which, by the way, includes those who have been grafted into the family. Their enemies say, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more” (Psalm 83:4). They march through city streets all over the world chanting, “From the river to the sea — Palestine will be free!” By “free” they mean “free of Jews” and those who serve the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. This is the sentiment of those who oppose God’s purpose and is the reason for David’s desire to see the salvation of Israel in Zion.
Try as they might, and in spite of limited success at times, the enemies of Israel will be dismayed to learn that the King of Israel will not allow them to prevail. Not now perhaps, but soon, He will subdue His enemies and ascend His Throne in Jerusalem to rule over all nations with a rod of iron. In that day, as it is written, “Out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and rebuke many people” (Isaiah 2:3-4). In that day, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is LORD.
In that day, what David longed to see — and what we all long to see — will become a reality: the salvation of Israel will come out of Zion and the Lord will gather His people unto Himself. It will be a Day of days with all of God’s people rejoicing and celebrating the victorious reign of our King. Until then, stay focused and keep looking and longing for the return of the King.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
