O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens! (Psalm 8:1)
As a child, I would often lay in bed, and in the darkness, attempt to contemplate GOD — the all-powerful, eternally existent Creator of heaven and earth. I can remember that it was common during these meditations to be overwhelmed with the sense of just how indefinable and incomprehensible God truly is. Even now, it is something my finite mind can not begin to comprehend and often leaves me unable to describe it. As one reads this psalm of David, it becomes clear that he, too, was often overcome by the magnitude of who and what the Creator truly is.
In the opening verse he alludes to the fact that we, as earthbound creatures, cannot even begin to understand all the complexities of the heavens. We gaze up at the multitudinous, starry hosts and are overcome with the realization that we are small and insignificant in comparison to the vastness of the universe that surrounds us. As we continue to look to the heavens, we become conscious of God’s greatness and come to understand that the heavens declare His glory and righteousness, and yet, still do not reveal the entirety of His might. As Solomon said, “the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him” which agrees with David’s understanding: the One who made the heavens is above the heavens — “(You) have set your glory above the heavens.”
Even so, the One who is above all makes His Name known to those of us who dwell below. Even though His majesty transcends the heavens and the earth — which is to say, everything that exists in the physical world — He manifests His majesty and excellence to even the smallest of His creations, particularly man. He does so that we might be moved to honor Him, to love Him and to serve Him. His greatness is manifest for us that we might fear Him above all powers and trust Him to keep us in all situations. It is amazing to consider that the One who has no beginning and no end and who created the immeasurable Universe with all of its mysteries is our LORD. He is our God, our Maker, our Redeemer and Savior. He who counts the number of the stars and calls them all by name knows our name. How excellent!
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
