And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. (Exodus 2:1-2)
According to the record we have, the “man of the house of Levi” was Amram; the “daughter of Levi” was Jochebed (Exodus 6:20). It is not an exaggeration to say that, together, they started a family that would change the course of history for the entire world. By the time the deliverer, Moses, was born to them, they already had two other children – Aaron and Miriam. Both of their older children would play important roles in God’s plan for His people, but it was the youngest of them, Moses, that God had special plans for.
The Hebrew term that is translated “beautiful” or “good child” is ki tov – literally, “that it/he was good.” This is interesting because the first time this phrasing is used in Scripture it refers to the appearance of light — “And God saw the light, that it was (ki tov) good (Genesis 1:4). In Hebrew this is understood to mean that the light was where it was supposed to be doing what it was supposed to do; another to say that is the light was functioning in its purpose.
The point that is made in describing Moses’ birth in this way is that, even in the midst of the Egyptian darkness, God was providing some light. In fact, Jewish legend says that, at his birth, the entire house was filled with light. Whether or not that is true is debatable but what is beyond doubt is the fact that God is always in control of every situation and always has a plan for His people. It is imperative, however, that we follow through with our role in His plan and make sure we are where we are supposed to be and doing what we are supposed to be doing. If we do that, then it can be said of us, as well, that we are ki tov. To function in our purpose is why we are on this planet and, so, if you’re not sure what that is, seek the Father to show you. I have no doubt that if you seek Him with all of your heart, He will show you what He wants you to do.
