Do not remember former iniquities against us! Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us, for we have been brought very low. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of Your name. (Psalm 79:8-9)
Throughout history, philosophers and the man on the street have often queried “What is the meaning of life?” Frankly, the answer is quite simple: we are here to fulfill the will of our Creator which is, through word and by deed, to sanctify His Name in the earth. All who come in contact with us should see His glory expressed through the choices we make, predicated upon our devotion to His Will. As Messiah said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
Unfortunately, there are too many times when we have done the opposite — that is, we have profaned His Name. Poor choices brought about by our desire to follow the inclination of the flesh have not only brought us misery but, at times, have caused others to call His integrity into question. As it is written, “You have profaned among the nations wherever you went” (Ezekiel 36:22). Like it or not, as His people we have been given the responsibility to protect His reputation in the sight of others, at least to some extent.
Regretfully, our carnal inclinations keep undermining this purpose thus prompting the psalmist to plead, “Do not remember former iniquities against us!” Though we have failed You in the past, please forgive us and give us another opportunity to set things right. Help us and give us the strength to live in such a way that Your great Name is sanctified in the sight of men; that they may also call upon You. It is a fact that we have all fallen short of this call but it is also true that His tender mercies do not fail. Consequently, as long as there is breath in our lungs, there is the potential to fulfill His Will if we are willing to die to our own.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
