The waters saw You, O God; the waters saw You, they were afraid. The depths also trembled. (Psalm 77:16)

From the very beginning of Creation, water has been a constant. In fact, there is no record of when God spoke water into existence; that point is merely inferred by the statement, “darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2). We know He brought water into existence because one of His earliest creative acts was to divide the waters above from the waters below with the formation of the firmament. This was accomplished by His decree; as it is written, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters” (Genesis 1:6).

The point is that everything He created is subject to His command and must respond to His word. As deep, as expansive and as foreboding as the seas may be, its waters must bow to the will of the Almighty. And so it is that the psalmist, most likely referring to the miraculous splitting of the Red Sea, reminds us that there is no power on earth that can stand against the Will of Almighty God. Even the mighty waters tremble at His Word, as the disciples observed when Yeshua calmed the angry sea; “Even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (Mark 4:41).

Let us now consider this: if the wind and sea obeys Him without question; if His command can cause the waters of the sea to split and stand up in heaps; if the waters of the Jordan River can peel back and allow His children to march into their promised inheritance without getting wet, why do men and women have such a hard time obeying Him? It occurs to me that mankind is the only created entity in the Universe that habitually resists His Will.

Obviously there are consequences for this resistance but the point is this — as His people, we should willingly, gladly and quickly respond to His every command. Our prayer today and everyday should be, “Not my will but Yours be done.” May that truly be our heart’s desire — to serve and please Him. On that note, let us close with meditation upon the power of this verse: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool…. For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist, says the Lord. But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word” (Isaiah 66:1-2).

Blessings and Shalom,
