God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God. (Psalm 62:11)
Scripture clearly establishes that any matter must be established “by the mouth of two or three witnesses” (Deuteronomy 19:15). It should also be pointed out that, for a matter to be established, the witnesses must not be in conflict with each other, but must agree. The matter being addressed here is the power and sovereignty of Almighty God. According to David, God Himself declared this to be so but, in concert with the Biblical standard, it has been validated by at least one other witness.
Consider: God first spoke through Moses who then wrote what God declared to him in the first four books of the Torah. Afterwards, Moses reiterated the spoken word of God in what Judaism refers to as the mishneh torah (second torah), the book we call Deuteronomy, or “second law.” Let’s also consider this: everything written by Moses in the Law was reaffirmed in some form or fashion by all the prophets of God, as they wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. They did not dispute or disagree with Moses in any way, but built upon what had already been established, thus adding more weight to the authority found in Scripture.
Then we come to this point: Messiah bears witness to the fact that everything revealed to Moses and the prophets is true. For instance, He is the prophet like unto Moses whose word was to be obeyed because, as He said, “If you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me” (John 5:46). Also, the works He did in the Father’s Name validated that He was the promised One and that “the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me” (John 5:37) and “bears witness of Me” (John 8:18). Furthermore according to the Messiah, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9) because He is the Word become flesh; “and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
The God of Israel, alone, is sovereign, all-powerful, the author of Truth and the only arbiter of right and wrong. This is firmly authenticated by His Word and the testimony of the countless number of witnesses who have come before us. That includes the celestial witnesses; as it is written: “The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). Without any doubt we have heard, more than once, that power belongs to God. Therefore, it falls to us to be His witnesses in this age. We are commissioned to bear witness to His sovereignty and, in concert with the rest of His Creation, proclaim peace, glad tidings of good things, and say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
