Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is with those who uphold my life. (Psalm 54:4)
Doeg and the Ziphites, for their own advantage, went to Saul in order to fill his ears with slander, intentionally ignoring the fact that another had already been anointed to replace Saul. In their ploy to curry Saul’s favor, they acted in defiance of God’s standards in regard to slander; as it is written, “Cursed is the one who attacks his neighbor secretly” (Deuteronomy 27:24). In short, they sought Saul’s blessing instead of seeking favor from the Lord. In turn, Saul invited their assistance in his futile endeavor to destroy the one assigned to replace him.
As for David, he realized that because he was anointed of God, no weapon — whether sword or tongue — could prevail against him if the Lord was on his side. He recognized that, in spite of the peril of his circumstances, God would deliver him from those who sought to harm him. In fact, as Saul closed in on David, a messenger brought news to the king of a surprise attack by the Philistines, compelling Saul to abandon his pursuit of David. It would have been obvious to David and to those who were with him, that this was no random event — it was the Hand of God.
I bear witness to the fact that there are events which have transpired in my life that, at the time, had the appearance of being the randomness of life. Only in hindsight did I see that, were it not for that particular event or situation, my life would have turned out much differently, and not necessarily for the better. In other words, even though I failed to recognize it then, looking back, I can see that God was my helper in so many different circumstances. Furthermore, I can now see that He orchestrated circumstances and moved in the lives of those used by Him to help me. I’m sure that all of us could attest to this as being true in our lives.
Though our enemies seek the support and assistance of men, if we are appointed and anointed of God, their plots and plans are bound to fail. That doesn’t mean we will never feel the heat and pressure of their intentions, but it means God will be there to help us. His aide might include moving upon others (like the Philistines) who, at His behest, take steps to assist us without ever knowing it. It is as Paul said, If God is for us, who can be against us? (Romans 8:31).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
