Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep; O Lord, You preserve man and beast. (Psalm 36:5-6)
It is God’s kindness and mercy that makes all life possible. It has been proven time and again, that if it were not for His goodness and mercy, mankind would cease to exist. As we know, one time it came very close to just that, but in His mercy, the Creator preserved man so that His purposes could continue. David speaks to this issue and reminds us that God’s mercy and faithfulness is far beyond what we can imagine — as far as the clouds are above the earth and the heavens above the clouds. His righteousness looms over us as mountains that overlook the plains; His justice is as fathomless, and often as unsearchable as the seas. Everywhere we look we see His greatness and His faithfulness to us and how He constantly provides for all living things.
Because of His kindness, He created a world in which sustenance is readily available to man and beast; in fact, the more essential it is for survival, the more abundant its supply. For instance, man or animal can go without food longer than we can go without water, which is why water is found in greater quantities and, unlike food, doesn’t have to be prepared. Air is the most basic need we have in order to live; we can go without water longer than we can go without air and so, it is no surprise that air is more abundant than water — it “reaches to the clouds.”
There are countless ways that God demonstrates His mercy and consideration to man and beast; many are as noticeable as the mountains that rise from the valley floor. On the other hand, many are hidden from our view just as the waters of the deep conceal an entirely different world beneath the waves. The point is, whether He makes Himself known or whether He conceals Himself, He continually watches over His Creation especially providing for those who love and serve Him. Thus we are reminded that not even a lowly sparrow can fall to the ground without our Father noticing. When it comes to His people, He counts the very hairs of our head, and therefore, as Messiah said, “Do not fear; you are of more value than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29-31).
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
