The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. (Psalm 33:10-11)

As we discussed in the previous devotion, the commandment of the LORD stands firm no matter the agenda of mankind. What He has ordained will, in the end, prevail over all the plots and schemes contrived by His enemies because, as the psalmist said, “He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.” Any effort to challenge His authority is futile and will eventually be annulled. For instance, consider those who attempted to build the tower of Babel and who said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth” (Genesis 11:4).

It wasn’t just the tower that presented a problem; it was their defiance in the face of God’s instruction to spread out and inhabit the earth. They considered their own counsel and authority to be superior to His, and consequently, they were determined to do what was in their heart. We all know how that turned out; not only did the tower crumble into ruins but their ability to mount such a rebellion was severely hampered when He confused their languages, depriving them of the power to communicate with one another.

In sharp contrast to the counsel of man, which comes to nothing, is the counsel of the LORD which stands forever. His laws govern the universe in spite of man’s attempts to deviate from them, a fact that is readily observed by all who have humble and subservient hearts. Not only that, but there are times when He overrides plans a man has devised in his heart with what He wishes that man to do. This means that, after a man’s plots his own agenda, God will implant in his mind and spirit what the Almighty desires; in the end, God’s counsel will win out over all else.

In short there is no man, righteous or otherwise, that God can’t use to further His plan and agenda. Furthermore, to those who have the wisdom to observe the things He has established, “the plans of His heart” are made obvious. Consequently, every generation has the responsibility to concede to His Will. I’ll sum it up this way: there is no viable reason to resist the Will of God. Every knee will bow and confess Him as LORD. The question is, will we do so now and of our own volition? Or will we be compelled to do so when we stand before Him in the world to come? As His people, let us make the choice to do serve Him now and with all our hearts.

Blessings and Shalom,
