By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth. (Psalm 33:6)

In the previous devotion we discussed the fact that it is the Word of God, which not only brought creation into existence, but also keeps creation in existence. In other words, as demonstrated by the notion of so-called dark energy, the Word of God is presently keeping the universe intact. As it is written, “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89), which is to say that His Word remains firmly established in the heavens and everything contained within creation. But let us also consider something else that is revealed in this verse; just as surely as He spoke the universe into existence, He also breathed the universe into being thus it is written, “all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”

If you recall in the previous devotion, we mentioned that cosmologists are convinced the universe is continually expanding. If this is so (and I’m inclined to think it entirely possible), in my mind the universe would be like a large balloon which contains all that exists. My point is, for the balloon to expand, someone must blow air (breathe) into it; without that breath the balloon would deflate and implode upon itself. Now consider this fact: you and I cannot speak if we cannot breathe, meaning that the spoken word and the breath in our lungs are connected to each other. Breath gives life to the words we speak. If this is so with us, could it not be similar in principle with the Creator? In other words, is there really any difference between His Word and His breath — or shall we say Spirit?

When God formed man, in order to be a living soul, God had to breathe the breath of life into Him — only then could man function in God’s intended purpose. Before Yeshua sent His disciples into the world to be His witnesses, “He breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ ” (John 20:22). In both cases, in order to carry out the Word of the Lord, His breath (the Hebrew word is ruach) was needed. Likewise, we all need to be filled with His Spirit — the Spirit of Truth — that we might fulfill the Word of Truth in our lives. Only by His Spirit and Word can we hope to fulfill the commission He has given us, and so, let us pray today and everyday, that the same breath that caused the heavens to exist would fill us with life and the power to be His faithful servants.

Blessings and Shalom,
