A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, they will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, that He has done this. (Psalm 22:30-31)
As David concludes this psalm, he makes it clear that everything he has expressed — the praise and the desperation — was not written solely for his generation; it was written for future generations. He was confident that “a posterity” (literally “a seed”) would continue being faithful servants and proclaim God’s renown before others, including those not yet born. His declarations that the LORD sustains His people through hardship; that the LORD will eventually govern all the nations of the earth in righteousness was to be lauded from generation to generation until the very last generation.
Perhaps this is why he chose to use the word “seed” — when a seed goes into the ground, it will produce a plant that eventually produces its respective fruit, in which is the seed that first brought it into being. In this way, the purpose of the seed is propagated into perpetuity. Likewise, the knowledge and testimony that comes with having a personal relationship with the Almighty works in the same way. When we receive the Seed of the Word, it produces fruit in our lives and, consequently, plants that same seed in others. In this way the Gospel of the Kingdom is spread throughout the earth from generation to generation.
This reminds me of what Messiah prayed on the eve of His crucifixion. After praying to the Father on behalf of His disciples He said, “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:20-21). In other words, all of us came to know the LORD because His disciples bore witness to His ministry and resurrection to that generation. In turn, others spread the word until, ultimately, it came to us — people who were not born when Messiah prayed this prayer.
When you think about it, that’s pretty amazing which should inspire us to do likewise and spread the Word as others before us have done. Presently, it is our turn to carry the torch forward for the sake of those not yet born. And so, let us be diligent to continue being His witnesses as we boldly proclaim the greatness of our God.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
