Your hand will find all Your enemies; Your right hand will find those who hate You. You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger; the Lord shall swallow them up in His wrath, and the fire shall devour them. Their offspring You shall destroy from the earth, and their descendants from among the sons of men. For they intended evil against You. (Psalm 21:8-11)
Previously we mentioned the Jewish belief that this psalm speaks prophetically of the Son of David; we could even say that the Messiah speaks prophetically through the words of David. In that vein of thought, notice that it is Gods’ Right Hand that seeks out and finds all those who hate the LORD. It is the LORD’s Right Hand that swallows up the wicked in His wrath because they intended evil against the the LORD. How so? Most often, the wicked wage war against God by coming against the people of God. As it is written, “Your enemies make a tumult and those who hate You have lifted up their head. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people and consulted together against Your sheltered ones” (Psalm 83:2-3).
Most people don’t really like to think too much about it but the fact is, when the One who sits at the Right Hand of God — the Messiah — returns, He will not be the meek, timid Lamb most people envision. He will return as a Lion, a conquering King — in short, a warrior. He will wage complete war against all who have opposed Him and His purpose. Many prophecies speak to this reality. For instance, through Malachi, the LORD says, “Behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven and … all who do wickedly will be stubble. The day which is coming shall burn them up” (Malachi 4:1). Through Isaiah the LORD says, “I have trodden them in My anger and trampled them in My fury; their blood is sprinkled upon My garments” (Isaiah 63:3). The point is, the Son of David, King Messiah will crush all of His enemies under His feet.
Scripture tells us that the LORD takes no pleasure in the destruction of wicked and neither should we (Ezekiel 18:23). On the other hand, as God’s people, it is entirely appropriate that we long for — and pray for — the time when wickedness is eradicated and righteousness and justice reign in its place. That is what David, and by extension the Son of David, declares to be a coming reality. Knowing this, keep fighting the good fight; continue to contend for the Kingdom of Heaven in spite of the present darkness. Keep looking for the day when, “The throne will be established; and One will sit on it in truth, in the tabernacle of David, judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness” (Isaiah 16:5).
