I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; my heart also instructs me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. (Psalm 16:7-8)
As was mentioned in the previous devotion, the LORD guides those who are desirous to serve Him, directing them in the path that they should go. Day and night, He leads us through life by His Sprit and Word, that is, if we are inclined to listen for the still, small voice. David acknowledged the LORD’s Presence in His life as counselor and guide saying, “I have set the Lord always before me.”
It is our tendency to think that the Master of the Universe cares little for our petty human affairs because He more focused on greater things. The reality is, whether the issue is great or small, if we consider Him in everything we do and seek His counsel, we will find that nothing in our life is too small or insignificant for Him.
Also, if the LORD is always before us — if His Presence continually abides with us — we will find that whatever happens in life, good or bad, can be appreciated. If we are assured He is guiding us through our life, then we can be assured that all things work together for our good because we have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). If He is walking with us, so close that He is at our right hand, then nothing in this world can shake us; that is, if we truly believe that He always does what is in our best interests, whether we see it or not. So when trouble comes — and it will — we must keep our focus upon Him always, never turning our thoughts away from Him.
These thoughts prompt me to recall the words of the Messiah, spoken after His resurrection to those He was sending into the world to make disciples. As they were sent out, He reassured them that “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Those words were spoken two thousand years ago but their relevance resonates in all who follow Him, even today. Therefore, following David’s example, let us set the Lord before us always, which is to say, let us live in such a way that His Presence is always with us, always guiding us because we refuse to allow anything in this world to come between us and our Maker. If we do this, come what may, we shall not be moved.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
