Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. (Psalm 16:9-10)
All of mankind was formed from the dust of the earth and, at our death, our bodies return to the dust. Nevertheless, just as the Hand of God guides His people through this existence, He will continue to guide us in what lies beyond this realm. Though our earthly component will return to that from which it came, it is also true that what came from Heaven — the eternal component — will not see destruction but will return to God. As it is written, “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it” (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
Not only that, but as David said, we can rest in the hope knowing that, at the appointed time, God will raise us up and “will not leave my soul in Sheol.” While David may have believed and hoped for a resurrection, Messiah’s death, burial and resurrection affirmed that the resurrection of the dead is a certainty — this promise has been made sure. Actually, according to Peter, the words of this psalm were more than just a hope — they were a prophecy of the Messiah. In regard to His suffering and His resurrection, David said, “You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption” (Acts 2:25-33). Seeing this future event, David’s heart was glad and full of joy.
No one likes to consider death but, for the believer, death is not the end of the story, only the end of one season in our existence. For those in Messiah, we have a sure and solid promise that He will raise us up at the Last Day. Having overcome Death, Hell and the Grave, Messiah will summon all who are in Him to shake off their grave clothes and be joined to Him for all eternity. One day, this will not be viewed from the perspective of being some time in the future — one day it will be reality. And we who are gathered together unto Him will, along with David and countless others, rejoice in fathomless measure.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
