The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. (Psalm 12:6)
In sharp contrast to the words of those with wicked motives — words that are worthless and unreliable — the sayings of God are free of anything that would diminish their veracity. If God says something, it is established and can be counted on to come to pass. Men make promises but, being fallen creatures, cannot ensure that the promise will be kept. On the other hand, the LORD is eternal and, therefore, His Word is eternal and all His promises are “Yes and Amen” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
David likens the sayings of God to silver that has been refined many times which is to say that it is has been tested — exposed to the fire of scrutiny and time — and has been found pure, faithful and true. Interestingly, the Hebrew word for truth, אמת emet (spelled alef, mem, tav) alludes to this. The first and last letters of this word — א alef and ת tav respectively — are representative of the Word of God because they are also the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet (equivalent to Alpha and Omega).
The middle letter of the word, מ mem, has a numerical value of 40 which in Scripture is associated with testing (e.g. Messiah was tested in the wilderness forty days). The point of this is to say, the Word of God (alef, tav) has been tested (mem) and found to be truth (emet).
Pictographically, the letter מ mem is associated with water (the Hebrew word is מים mayim, spelled mem, yod, mem). In regard to our topic today, water is sometimes used to represent the Word of God, as in Paul’s statement that we are to be sanctified and cleansed with the “washing of water by the word” (Ephesians 5:26). But it also reminds me of this verse: “For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9).
There is coming a day when the Word of God will prevail over all the words of men, forever sweeping away all the falsehood, accusations and worthless sayings that have polluted this world since the serpent deceived the woman. His Word will go out from Jerusalem and will fill the world with the purity of truth. Until that day, may we continually fill our hearts, minds and spirit with His Word that, in our own lives, we are refined as silver.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
