He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. (Psalm 1:3)

The Hebrew word translated as rivers or streams of water comes from a root word that means “to split” indicating that the main water source branches off into other streams that travel out from the source. This is exactly what is described in the very beginning; a river ran through the midst of the garden and then divided into four other rivers that traveled into distant lands. So then, the same source that watered Eden and its garden watered other regions as well, thus allowing for the growth of trees and plants in these distant places. It is therefore implied that what God started in Eden was intended to spread to and impact other parts of the earth; as it is written: “The earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness” (Psalm 24:1).

Likewise, the source that waters the good tree in this Psalm branches out to supply life-giving water to other areas, and provides the prospect for other good trees to spring up along the banks of the streams. Considering that the trees we are speaking of are, in reality, men, the idea presented is that the Word of God is not limited in its reach and scope — it is for all mankind wherever he may be. This brings to mind a passage found in Isaiah which says, “For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem” (Isaiah 2:3), meaning that it will go into all the world.

In that same vein, let’s consider that the blessed man is like a tree that “brings forth its fruit in its season.” In Judaism this is understood to mean that, as a person’s fruit matures, there comes a season in which he or she will be adequately equipped to “feed” others — that is make disciples. The Word that impregnates us is designed to produce fruit in our lives but not just for our benefit. It was always intended that what God started in us would spread out and positively impact everyone we encounter thus propagating the Kingdom. So then we are reminded of our purpose: as Messiah said, “By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples” (John 15:8), “therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19).
