The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.” (Psalm 2:2-3)
Previously, we mentioned that these verses address the fact that the kingdoms of this world stand in opposition to the Kingdom of God and the Messiah. That is something we can see from the very beginning in the likes of Cain, Nimrod and others, and even to this present time. Since the fall of man, there has existed a tendency to resist God’s sovereignty and the fact that His Word is the final authority as to what is right and wrong. In our fallen state, we have the inclination to see the Word of God as an impediment to living life as we see fit when, in reality, His Word serves to warn us of the dangers of doing what is right in our own eyes.
Still, a rebellious heart sees God’s instructions as controlling, unjust and an obstacle to be overcome if they are to enjoy their preferred lifestyle. It is this mindset that, no doubt, prompts the statement, “Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.” In other words, the rebels of this world want to break away from anything connected to the idea that God’s Word is the standard by which we should live.
Because their aim is to fulfill their hearts’ desire, they want to erase any boundary that prevents their way of thinking from being regarded as acceptable, perverted though it may be. The manifestation of this mindset is what we are witnessing, today, in our culture and society. Men are claiming to be women and women are claiming to be anything they wish to be, even if it is ridiculous and laughable. Rebellion runs amok.
As believers, we should not fall into the trap of perceiving the instructions of a loving Father as bonds and chains. I say that because, unfortunately, some Christians have bought into the notion that anything in God’s Word that comes before Matthew brings us into bondage. That is simply not true. It is true that God’s Word, from beginning to end, is intended to arrest our carnal nature so that we might live a life that is pleasing to our God. Being a new creation in Messiah empowers us to live an abundant life, as we are guided by His Spirit — the Spirit of Truth. In short, our Father’s instructions are for our good and we should always receive His Word as from a loving Father to His beloved children. We are not rebels but sons and daughters, so then, let us behave accordingly.
Blessings and Shalom,
Bill
