I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)

Because He created all things, all of God’s Creation speaks in harmony with His Word and His Will. As it is written, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). That being so, the Creation also stands as a witness to His sovereignty and, at His command, speaks on His behalf. Thus He can “call heaven and earth as witnesses” to testify against those who are walking in disobedience and to provoke them to return to the ways of life and blessing.

Based on this fact, we can conclude that signs in the heavens and earth are meant, primarily, for those who are His people. I say “His people” because the people of the world don’t really pay attention to such things — not nearly as much as the people of God should. That being said, the message doesn’t always have to be interpreted as a bad thing providing that we do, in fact, pay attention and heed the message within the signs. For example, the Messiah said that the heavens and earth will alert us to the time of our redemption (Luke 21:25). In this vein of thought, it is needful that we pay close attention to what the heavens and earth are saying — i.e. testifying — to His people. Let us consider  what Paul had to say on the matter:

“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.” (Romans 8:19-22)

In short, the Creation testifies that the time has come for the children of God to be revealed to the world. How are they to be revealed? Based on what Moses had to say to Israel, it seems clear that those who choose to do what God has instructed — even in the face of a world determined to walk contrary to the will of God — will stand out from the world, or if you will, be revealed. Thus heaven and earth are bearing witness to what the Almighty spoke so long ago, which is, though most of the world is choosing the broad way — the way of death and cursing — let us choose the narrow path, the one and only path that leads to life.

Blessings and Shalom,
