Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m going to tell you something that you’ve never heard before.” Or, “I’m going to present something in a way like you’ve never heard it before.” Or, “God has given me revelation and only to me and if you’re going to hear what God is saying right now, then you need to listen to me.” When I’ve heard such things, my antenna says, “Beware!”
Do people get revelations from God? Absolutely, they do. Does God reveal things that heretofore have been concealed? Yes, He does. In fact, Scripture speaks of this concept many, many times. One example of this is found in the book of Amos:
“Surely the Lord God does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7)
The key here is, when the Creator is revealing such things to His prophets, it is so the Body can be edified and equipped to do what God is leading them to do. In other words, He doesn’t reveal these secrets to His prophets in order to glorify the prophets, but in order that His people would glorify Him. I hate to say it, but sometimes, as people, we delude ourselves into thinking that, God speaks speaks to us for our exclusive benefit.
If someone does have a revelation from God and shares it with the Body, my spirit should bear witness with what they’re saying. Furthermore, it shouldn’t draw attention to them; it shouldn’t glorify them, but should direct attention and worship to the Father in heaven. Also consider that the Scripture tells us that there is really nothing new under the sun, so there’s really no such thing as a “new” revelation. It’s just that the Creator, in His time and according to His will, reveals things as He sees fit. But again, its purpose is to bring glory to Him, to advance His agenda, not ours.
Furthermore, I want you to consider that there could be a more sinister element to some of these types of situations and “new” revelations. We must remember that the tares are never content to grow in a field of tares. Their aggressive nature always pushes them the field of wheat. In other words, whatever the Creator is doing, that’s the very thing the adversary is going to try to disrupt, and many times, by rendering confusion. If we truly believe we are living in the last days, we need to be on guard where these new revelations are concerned. Knowledge and its appeal has been the very thing the adversary has used since the beginning of time to seduce and deceive God’s people. We should pay heed to what Paul said many years ago:
“We should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Messiah.” (Ephesian 4:14-15)
Where do we think these winds of doctrine are going to blow – in the world? Certainly not. Winds of doctrine will blow within the body. We shouldn’t immediately reject someone who feels that they have a word from the Lord – we need to hear what they have to say. But we don’t need to be so easily taken by every new thing that comes along. We need to judge these things according to the Word. We need to mature in the faith and to stand fast in what is written.
When something comes along considered to be a new revelation, if it’s from the Father, it’s going to withstand scrutiny. It is our responsibility to “show ourselves approved to rightly divide the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). When the Father does speak, the spirit that’s within us is going to resonate with what is being spoken, because it will be true.
Shalom.
